Position Summary

Job Title:        Director of Software Development

Department:  Software Development Operations

Location:        Remote

The Director of Software Development at POMS has overarching responsibility for the company’s entire software solutions portfolio, and provides technology guidance and development vision for the company with a view towards supporting both short and long term company profitability. They are an active, collaborative member of the executive team and contribute towards the long-term strategic planning for the company. They cultivate close relationships with peers and clients to understand requirements and craft aggressive product roadmaps and strategies that meet those product development priorities, striking a sensible balance between technology innovation, business needs, and emerging/evolving market demands. They deliver direct technical consulting, design, and development services that provide a clear value proposition to both external and internal customers.

On a day-to-day basis they direct and oversee the company’s software engineering organization in developing, releasing, and maintaining software applications. They maintain final responsibility for decision making related to new product features and processes, with an eye towards developing and driving long term product architectures that translate into competitive advantages for the company.

Job Responsibilities:

Operational

  • Provide technical and architectural vision for all POMS software products.
  • Establish the software development processes, protocols, and practices the POMS team uses to manage the software development life cycle (SDLC).
  • Ensure that development projects and software deployments meet business requirements and goals, fulfill end-user requirements, and meet a high level of quality.
  • Build, manage, mentor and guide a high-peforming, multi-national, distributed development team that values technical excellence, cross-functional collaboration, and great customer experiences. Strive to optimize its capabilities in developing and delivering high-quality products in timeframes that meet business needs. Identify and promote employee career growth.
  • Work effectively with the other POMS functional groups (Sales/Marketing, Professional Services, Support) and the leadership team to allocate engineering resources appropriately across various projects, juggling current internal and external customer needs with the longer-term product roadmap. Weigh, balance, and communicate tradeoffs as required.

  • Author and update internal and external policies and procedures for the software development organization that are consistent with the overall business needs.

Leadership

  • Embody a “software for life” attitude towards the on-going maintenance and support of existing products and services.
  • Ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of products through the entire application life cycle – turning initial concepts into production-ready software.
  • Provide technical vision and guidance to current and future development efforts. Establish, maintain, and execute on both technical and functional product roadmaps. Conduct research and planning for new technologies that could be applied to the company’s products and/or services in the future.
  • Ensure a culture of design excellence, maturity, quality, collaboration, planning, and responsiveness in the software engineering team.

Qualifications [Minimum Required Education and Experience] 

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a similar field
  • 7+ years leading software development teams delivering production-ready solutions to high availability, regulated environments. Specific experience with manufacturing execution software a plus.
  • Experience with web-based OLTP applications
  • Experience with HTML5, Oracle, C# .Net, Bootstrap, JavaScript, jQuery, CSS3, SQL
  • Proficient with software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies such as Agile, Scrum, and Kanban
  • Proficiency with Azure DevOps
  • Experience with cloud-based development technologies (e.g., containerization) and experience in implementing web-based applications in these environments
  • Demonstrate strong computer science fundamentals (e.g., design patterns, data structures, data management and communication, and algorithm development)

What the position is

We are seeking a highly qualified Principal Solutions Consultant to lead our customer implementation projects within our Professional Services organization.  This position is a senior position within the organization, responsible for customer satisfaction and project success.

What you will do

As a member of our project team, you will help lead successful MES implementation projects by applying your POMSnet product knowledge and project implementation experience.  Your span of responsibility for this position can include multiple domestic and international projects.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate all project activities in collaboration with the Project Manager.  You may assume the role of Project Manager on smaller projects.  Report progress and issues to POMS and Customer project managers in a regular and timely manner.
  • Lead workshops to analyze user requirements and define functional requirements for MES solutions through client interviews and documentation analysis.
  • Lead the discussions with the customer to evaluate requirements and business processes, review functional and technical designs and develop solutions to satisfy requirements.  Author design documentation which describes the to-be POMS solution and its fit into the solution landscape.
  • Understand the complexities and requirements of customer business applications such as ERP, LIMS and DCS systems.  Design interfaces between POMS products and customer business systems. Utilize business application integration products to interface between systems.
  • Understand and decompose customer’s manufacturing processes and configure them in POMS products through electronic recipes and work instructions.
  • Lead and coordinate the definition, collection, configuration, and modeling of customer data for POMS products. Determine the appropriate methods for data loading into the POMS systems.   Provide guidance and expertise to POMS and Customer project teams with understanding data requirements and data reporting.
  • Coordinate activities of the technical specialists for product installation (Installation Verification Manual) and interfaces including design, implementation, testing and documentation.
  • Understand and support customer system validation requirements and industry regulations (e.g. FDA regulations, GAMP etc.) for pharmaceutical and regulated industries.  Assist in authoring validation and testing documentation to support customer’s validation efforts.
  • Develop and maintain detailed functional knowledge of POMS products.  Develop a practical and basic working knowledge of relational databases, barcode label software, reporting software and other software products as required.
  • Lead in the creation of project plans consisting of deliverables, tasks, work packages, levels of effort, dependencies, and schedules. Liaise between customer project teams and management, and internal project team and management.
  • Participate in quoting and estimating of project scope to ensure successful project execution.
  • Develop customer relationships and anticipate customer needs with a priority on customer satisfaction.
  • Educate customers on POMS project methodologies with a goal towards enhancing the customer’s standards.
  • Ability to review sales proposals and engineering studies to ensure accurate estimates for identified scope of work.
  • Act and represent POMS as an industry-wide expert in MES and serve as a technical subject matter expert.
  • Lead customer facing technical communications.
  • Mentor POMS Solutions Consultants.

What the position is

We are seeking a highly qualified Program Manager to manage the business relationship with strategic customers related to the ongoing rollout of POMS solutions.  At POMS, program and project management is about more than facilitating a meeting or sending a status report.  Program Managers provide visibility and clarity to the customer about the activities and deliverables that are important to the success of the project.  They are forward looking, ensuring that resources and tools will be in place when needed.  They mitigate problems before they occur.  They reduce risk of failure.

What you will do

You are responsible for the commercial and business success of assigned projects.  Program managers track and ensure delivery on contractual commitments.  They ensure we do not exceed our scope.  They look for and remove blockers for the project team.  They manage the budget through effective forecasting.  They collaborate and communicate with the project team all aspects of the project, including current and upcoming activities.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead enterprise level Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences projects, including the justification, design, implementation and commissioning activities.
  1. Lead and coordinate new customer sites planning, current site expansion and enhancement requests related to long term customer deployment plans.
  1. Keep the customer informed of POMS activities and status. Conduct regular meetings with the customer project team. Distribute meeting minutes to capture action items and key decisions.  Distribute regular status reports.
  1. Understand the overall customer schedule and how customer activities and deliverables fit into the POMS schedule. Manage the POMS project schedule.
  1. Create project plans consisting of deliverables, tasks, work packages, levels of effort, dependencies, and schedules.
  1. Manage the relationship with key stakeholders and keep a pulse on customer satisfaction and customer dynamics. Maintain informal communication with the key customer stakeholders.
  1. Manage projects to ensure scope is delivered within required performance criteria including budget, schedule, quality and customer satisfaction. Ensure all deliverables are provided on schedule and all committed activities and performed. Negotiate scope disagreements and changes.
  1. Serve as the primary point of contact for the customer escalations. Leverage the Director of Professional Services for customer escalations when required.
  1. Guide projects according to the POMS project methodology as well as company procedures and guidelines. You model best practices and behaviors for the project team.
  1. Be engaged regularly with the project team. Manage the project assignments of Solutions Consultants and other staff for assigned projects. Plan resource needs in collaboration with the Director of Professional Services.
  1. Collaborate with Sales and Customer Support organizations in developing Statements of Work including effort estimates, scope, deliverables, and timelines.
  1. Collaborate with the Director of Professional Services and Finance to ensure project forecasting and financials are accurately reflected in the corporation’s project accounting systems.
  1. Mentor POMS Solutions Consultants and Project Managers.
  1. Provide thought leadership at industry conferences and company user group events.
