POMS
MES for Regulated CPG Industries
Management of Manufacturing Operations
from Dock to Stock
Overview
Honeywell’s POMS MES for Regulated CPG is a suite
of functionality designed for manufacturing operations.
The purpose of the suite is to guide and assist the
manufacturing operator through complex manufacturing
processes while assuring the use of best practices.
In addition, POMS MES captures important data pertaining
to the process including compliance data (for regulated
industries) and process data related to the manufacturing
events.
There are three
integrated functional areas of the POMS MES suite:
• WIP Management
• Pre-weigh Control (also called Weigh/Dispense)
• Interactive Operating Instructions
• The Integrated Model
Interfacing associated
with the POMS MES suite includes:
• External interfaces to ERP, LIMS, Document Management,
Asset Management
• RF functionality
• Equipment interfaces to PLC’s (programmable
logic controllers)
POMS MES WIP Management
The strong base of the POMS MES for CPG product is
the ability to manage materials. The POMS MES product
contains a full function, raw material stock locator
system. The material locator may be managed at the lot
level or the container level. Greater system functionality
is seen if materials are at the container level. Each
container will have it’s own expiration and retest
dates and disposition characteristics, thus an anomaly
for one container will not tie up the entire lot of
the product.
WIP Management functionality
includes:
• Material receipt (either from a PO and freight
bill or a miscellaneous receipt)
• Material consumption (line dispense) and product
creation (output)
• Material sampling
• Unplanned Materials
• Material Disposition (assay data required for
potency calcs, expire date, retest date and quality
status)
• Material movement (scheduled and adhoc)
• Warehouse and location management (class and
location type)
• Material adjustment
• Material waste
• Material return to supplier
• Genealogy of the consumed materials
• Labeling of materials
• Yield and reconciliation of the final product
of the recipe
The following are
benefits of the offering:
• Reduced material on hand because the material
location is known
• Reduced lot liability by handling the inventory
at the container level
• Individual disposition, expire and retest dates
for the containers
• Receipt of materials against a PO or by miscellaneous
receipt.
• Scheduled or adhoc movement of materials AND
direct update to ERP of the movement
• Material adjustment with direct updates to ERP
• 24hr by 7 day operation with store and forward
capability to ERP during ERP downtime periods
• Labeling of the materials (and material reprint
if needed)
POMS MES Pre-weigh or Weigh / Dispense
An extension of POMS MES WIP Management functionality
is Pre-weigh, or Weigh/Dispense.
The POMS MES Pre-weigh functionality is a very rich
function within the POMS suite. POMS MES offers 10 different
Pre-weigh methods based on best manufacturing practices.
Pre-weigh is based on a minimal amount of WIP Management
functionality in which a container or lot of released
material is present to weigh. Coupled with POMS MES
WIP Management functionality, Pre-weigh becomes a full
function weigh and dispense execution subsystem meeting
the needs of manufacturing best practices.
Pre-weigh functionality
includes:

• Asset maintenance for rooms, scales and balances
• Scale and balance calibration and standardization
• Order driven and manually initiated weighing
• Kitting
• Material pre-weighing and staging
• Volumetric weighing
• Material staging
• Material substitution
• Waste
• Labeling (and re-printing if needed)
• Weighing to account centers
• Lot allocation
POMS MES Pre-weigh allows for manufacturing orders
for materials to be either manually entered or interfaced
to ERP. Material substitution is allowed.
Scales and balances are managed allowing calibration,
standardization and application connectivity to the
Pre-weigh software modules. Personnel training requirements
may be tracked and enforced within the Pre-weigh functionality.
Manual weighing requests (such as pre-weighs or adhoc
material requisitions) are allowed with traceability
to a specified account number. Re-containerization (allocating
of materials) and staging are allowed.
The benefits of implementing
POMS MES Pre-weigh are as follows:
• Greater accuracy of the weigh
• Reduced errors due to electronic interfacing
with the scale or balance
• Enhanced lot tracking
• Greatly reduced lot substitution errors or errors
involving expired material
• Enhanced labeling
• Enhanced productivity due to kitting and staging
of weighed materials
• Reduction of manufacturing complexity using
two operators and check-weighing
• Increased productivity by managing personnel,
rooms and scales to meet the weigh needs of the manufacturing
• Tracking of training compliance (if initiated)
for Pre-weigh area
